Grit, Growth and Glory: Walpole Warriors Make History with First-Ever MTOC State Championship

Championships are rarely won in a single game.

They are built over years of early morning practices, long drives to away games, heartbreaking losses, determined comebacks, and a group of young athletes who refuse to give up on one another.

That was the story of the Walpole Youth Soccer Association's 7th/8th Grade Boys team, whose remarkable journey ended with history being made. This spring, the Warriors captured the Division 2 Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC) State Championship—the first boys team in WYSA history to bring home an MTOC state title.

For many of these players, the championship was the final chapter of a soccer journey that began together in kindergarten.

The road to the title wasn't a straight line.

Two years ago, as sixth graders, the team qualified for the BAYS playoffs but saw its season end in the opening round. Last year, they advanced all the way to the BAYS Championship game, only to fall to Wayland, the eventual MTOC State Champion. The disappointment was real, but so was the belief that their opportunity would come.

This season tested that belief.

The Warriors opened the spring with an impressive 5-1 record. Their only early defeat came while playing shorthanded after injuries forced them to compete with just nine players—a performance the coaches still proudly refer to as the "Elite Nine."

Then came adversity.

A string of injuries and scheduling conflicts slowed the team's momentum, resulting in a stretch of difficult results. Suddenly, what had looked like a promising season was in jeopardy.

Instead of folding, the Warriors responded.

Facing a must-win match against Needham, Walpole earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory, creating a three-way tie atop the standings. Because of the league's tiebreaker rules, the Warriors had to earn their playoff spot in a play-in game against Mansfield.

With just minutes remaining, Walpole trailed 1-0.Then came the moment that changed everything.

A perfectly timed pass set up the equalizer, igniting the sidelines and shifting the momentum instantly. Walpole dominated overtime and scored twice more to complete an unforgettable 3-1 comeback victory.

The postseason had begun—and the Warriors never looked back.

The next challenge came against Newton under some of the wildest weather conditions imaginable. Torrential rain poured down for much of the match, tents nearly blew away, and soaked players battled through standing water. While the weather created chaos, Walpole played some of its best soccer of the season, earning a convincing 7-2 victory. After the game, the Newton coach offered a simple message: "Congratulations. Now go get Watertown." They did exactly that.

The Warriors claimed the BAYS Division 2 Championship with a 4-1 victory over Westborough, finally earning the opportunity that had slipped away the previous two seasons—a trip to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions.

MTOC would prove to be the team's finest weekend of soccer all year.

Walpole opened with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Whitman-Hanson, a team that would eventually reach the tournament's Final Four. A 5-3 win over Saugus followed before the Warriors completed the round robin with a dominant 6-0 shutout over Holden, despite having to rely on several field players to step into goal due to injuries.

The semifinal against Watertown was exactly the battle everyone expected. Every tackle mattered. Every loose ball was contested. Walpole's defense shut down Watertown's dangerous attack, and one relentless hustle play produced the game's only goal. The Warriors advanced with a gritty 1-0 victory.

The championship game against Medford would require one final push.

Despite controlling much of the first half, Walpole went into halftime scoreless after several shots struck the goalposts. The players were exhausted after an emotional playoff run, but with 30 minutes remaining, they dug deep one last time. The result was a 2-0 victory. A State Championship.

While the goals drew the headlines, coaches say this championship was built on teamwork. Head Coach Dana Niles summed up the accomplishment best.

"This was a championship well earned. After an up-and-down regular season, the boys locked in during their playoff run by combining offensive firepower with defensive grit. It was a complete team effort. We couldn't be more proud."

Coach Mike Finocchi reflected on watching many of these players grow together over nearly a decade.

"I couldn't be happier for these boys. They are a pleasure to be around. Their desire for the game is infectious. I've watched many of them play since kindergarten, and what a way to finish their youth soccer careers and put WYSA on the championship map."

Coach Matt Roberts added, "What a great group of kids. They are incredibly talented, and I wish them nothing but success in high school. Hopefully our seventh graders got enough of a taste to make another run at MTOCs next year."

Behind every successful youth team is a community that makes it possible. The coaches expressed their appreciation to the parents who spent countless hours driving to practices and games, rearranging schedules, postponing vacations, and cheering from the sidelines through sunshine, rainstorms, and everything in between.

The championship roster included Miguel Abreu, Adrian Bero, Brayden Caneja, Jovan Cianci, Noah Constante, Julian Filipi, AJ Finocchi, Griffin Mace, Finn Maffei, Ben Niles, Ronald Obour-Mensah, Max Penza, Kyle Roberts, Jacob Travers, Declan Walsh, and Adi Yathu.

Years from now, the scores may fade from memory. What will remain is the journey—a group of teammates who believed in one another, embraced every challenge, and left an enduring legacy for Walpole Youth Soccer.

The 2026 MTOC State Championship was more than a trophy. It was the reward for years of perseverance, resilience, friendship, and an unwavering commitment to the words that defined their season: Grit and Grind.

Congratulations, Warriors. You made history, and you made the entire Walpole community proud.
